Swim Teacher - All Abilities

Royal Life Saving All Abilities is a nationally recognised course for swim teachers looking to gain specialist knowledge in teaching people living with a disability. Accreditation is valid for three years.
The All Abilities course will deliver the skills and knowledge required to effectively and safely, teach swimming and water safety skills to people with a disability. It will provide information on people living with a disability, their experiences and needs, and how you can best support them in aquatic activities.
Please note: Royal Life Saving Society NSW is not a CRICOS provider; it is unable to provide national training to overseas students holding a student visa.
Course Prerequisites
The following units from the SISSS00132 – Swimming and Water Safety Teacher Skillset must be held, before commencing this course:
- SISCAQU024 - Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills
- SISCAQU025 - Teach water safety and survival skills
As these units of competency are newly introduced to the aquatics industry, we are providing a number of expedited pathways to attain these pre-requisites, depending on the qualifications you currently hold.
Throughout your enrolment process, you will be prompted to upload evidence of one of the above scenarios – please ensure that units of competency are specifically listed. Once accepted, you will be enrolled into your relevant coursework.Course Structure/ Delivery Mode
This course is delivered in a blended format; below are the steps of the participants journey.

Step 1 Book a course and complete/provide evidence for Prerequisite requirements. All Abilities course material is delivered via a blended mechanism, involving online learning and on the job assessments, alongside third-party observation from an approved RLS Workplace Supervisor. Candidates must have access to a computer and the internet to access these online modules.
Step 2 Complete online modules. Upon fulfilling the prerequisite requirements, candidates will be required to complete a self-paced online knowledge component. Only those who have completed the online modules in full will be able to complete the on-the-job assessments.
Step 3 Complete and Submit Step 3 (pages 3-12) of the All Abilities Workbook. The workbook involves an on-the-job assessment, which ensures the swim teacher can apply the skills learnt in the online course at their place of employment. The on-the-job component needs to be signed off by an approved RLS Workplace Supervisor for final approval. The Workplace Supervisor will then submit the application on the candidates behalf to - submissions@royalnsw.com.au
Candidates are covered under Royal Life Saving Insurance until the final Statement of Attainment has been issued.
Step 4 Complete Step 4 (pages 13-14) in the All Abilities Workbook. To obtain your Swim Teacher – All Abilities licence, you are required to complete this section alongside your Approved Royal Life Saving Workplace Supervisor, who will submit the Licence Application to Royal Life Saving - by email to submissions@royalnsw.com.au -on your behalf.
Section 3 and 4 of the Unit Completion and Licence Workbook may be submitted at the same time if suitable.
Duration
The amount of training is approximately 20 hours, comprising of:
· Online learning and assessment: 8 hours
· On-the-job teaching and assessment: 12 hours
Outcomes
The Royal Life Saving Swim Teacher - All Abilities course contains units of competency which are nationally recognised from the Sport, Aquatics and Recreation Training package. Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements, candidates will be issued a Statement of Attainment for the following units:
- SISCAQU028 - Assist participants with disability during aquatic activities
Swim Teacher Licence
In addition to the successful completion of the online component of the course, candidates are required to complete on-the-job teaching hours in a range of teaching conditions in order to obtain a Swim Teacher Licence. This on-the-job assessment ensures the Swim Teacher is able to apply the skills learnt in the training course at their place of employment. The on-the-job component needs to be signed off by a Royal Life Saving Approved Workplace Supervisor, who will submit the application to Royal Life Saving on behalf of the candidate. Introduction:
To gain the Swim Teacher – All Abilities qualification, the following assessment components must be satisfactorily completed:
- Complete the Online Learning Module(s). This qualification now has set prerequisites, candidates will be enrolled into a pathway reflecting their current qualifications. For any Assessment Submissions, please allow 10 business days for marking to occur. Once marked, the following module will become available.
- Practical on the job teaching hours in a learn to swim environment signed off by an Approved Royal Life Saving Workplace Supervisor.
- All Abilities Workbook to be completed, signed off and submitted by an Approved Royal Life Saving Workplace Supervisor to Royal Life Saving.
